1.
The hospital was a bustle of activity. Men hovered over their pregnant wives, eyes glowing with anticipation for the new lives on the way.
I was the only one alone, perched on a cold plastic chair.
The doctor’s words echoed in my head: “I recommend terminating the pregnancy to save your own life.”
But how could I? This was our first child in ten years of marriage… mine and James Mitchell’s.
I let a hand drift gently to my stomach, feeling the tiny embryo inside, and sighed before dialing James’s number.
It rang for five minutes before he picked up. “What’s up? Make it quick.”
He had no idea I was pregnant. His tone was as cold as always.
My fingers tightened around the phone, knuckles whitening. “I… I—”
“Daddy, up!”
A little kid’s sweet voice cut in, light as a feather but hitting me like a sledgehammer.
James Mitchell? Having a kid behind my back? It couldn’t be.
Maybe the kid mixed up his words?
“Oliver, hush…” A woman’s voice, probably the mom, muffling the child. Faint whimpers came through the line.
James panicked instantly—his breathing hitched, and he stammered, “I—gotta go. Something came up. Talk when I’m home.”
Click. The line went dead.
My mind went blank, thoughts swirling chaotically until a nurse asked if I was okay. I slowly lowered the phone.

Home was pitch-black when I got back.
It was 8 PM, and James still wasn’t home.
He always said he was in meetings, swamped with work—“Building us a better life,” he’d say. So I’d kept the home running smoothly, letting him focus without distractions.
Never in a million years did I think he’d cheat. Let alone have a kid.
I pressed a hand to my forehead, memories flooding in.
The first time we met as kids, James had declared he’d marry me someday.
At our wedding, he’d slipped the ring on my finger so softly.
In bed at night, he’d hold me close, my skin still warm from lovemaking, and nip my ear: “Sophie Taylor, I’m the luckiest man alive to have you.”
My eyes burned—dry, scratchy, heavy with unshed tears. The crystal chandelier’s light glinted, making everything feel unreal.
Then James walked in. He jumped, clearly surprised to find me up at midnight—usually I was asleep hours before.
He recovered fast. “Still up? Miss me that much?”
He wrapped his arms around me, a light touch that felt like a ton of bricks. I stiffened like a board.
“Something happen earlier?” He buried his face in my neck. “You never call during the day.”
No, I’d loved him too much to bother him.
My hands curled into fists on my lap, nails digging into my palms for warmth. But I still shivered.
“I’m pregnant.”
James froze, then pulled back, voice exploding with joy: “No way! That’s amazing, Sophie—we’re having a baby!”
I studied his grin, fleetingly wondering if I’d been wrong. Maybe it was a mix-up.
Then his smile faded, replaced by irritation. He loosened his tie with a sigh.
“Sophie, timing’s off. The company’s in a funding crisis. We need a fully focused partner right now.”
“So?” My voice came out sharp, nails biting deeper.
“Tomorrow,” he said, kissing my cheek—smelling of tequila. “I’ll book you the best doctor. Promise it’ll be clean, no issues.”
“Still got work. Night.”
3.
James Mitchell bolted out the door in such a rush, he forgot his lighter.
The man never went five minutes without a cigarette—forgetting his lighter? Something had definitely thrown him off.
Sure enough, as I inched toward the door, a familiar woman’s voice floated in from outside: “Someone’s in a hurry. Your wife’s just inside, y’know.”
I rubbed my cold hands together, trying to convince myself it was just some drunk couple fooling around.
“Nah, she can’t hear… and even if she could, she won’t dare leave. I swallowed up her family’s company, remember?”
That voice…
No mistaking it. It was James.
I stood behind the door, fists clenched so tight I wanted to pound on the wood and scream that I knew everything. But I held back. I had no leverage, no way to fight back.
It was true—my company was gone. And I’d handed it over voluntarily, all because I loved him.
Turns out I’d bet on the wrong man’s love.
“Naughty,” the woman purred, playful. James ate it up.
Outside, their flirting melted into kisses. Inside, the cold lights seeped into my skin like frost.
I picked up the lighter, flicking it on and off.
James didn’t need this silly thing anymore. If he wanted it, he could buy a hundred fancier ones. Just like he didn’t need me—someone from an equal background. If he wanted, any woman could take my place.
He never loved me.
I flipped off the lights and wandered to the bedroom like a zombie, tears spilling before I could stop them. They soaked into the down comforter.
My hand hovered over my barely showing belly, feeling the tiny heartbeat sync with mine. A quiet decision took root in my chest.
