After three years of love, we were finally about to step into the halls of marriage.
On the day of the proposal, Ethan Walker held me tightly, tears soaking into my shoulder.
But now, standing on the stage, his gaze was cold: "Emily Stone, don’t be naïve. You really thought I would marry someone like you, a woman who's fickle and obsessed with vanity?"
Behind him, a large screen was looping a disgraceful video, and the woman in it was me.
He took the microphone, his voice ice-cold: "Ladies and gentlemen, this is just an appetizer. The real bride today is—Sophie Miller!"
Guests gasped, and Sophie Miller, teary-eyed, walked up the stage, her face full of excitement.
She gave me a quick glance, her eyes full of challenge.
I stepped closer to Ethan, my voice trembling: "That’s not me, Ethan. Please, believe me, don’t do this to me."
He stepped back in disgust: "Don’t touch me, Emily Stone. You make me sick."
"Yeah, Emily Stone, look at you now. If Ethan marries you, where will he put his face?" Sophie Miller chimed in.
"Ethan Walker, when you proposed, you said you would always trust me, protect me, and never let me be hurt." I fought back tears.
"You think you deserve that?" He sneered.
I had asked myself countless times whether I was worthy, but it was you who told me I deserved the best.
I believed it, only to realize it was all lies.
"Ethan, we've been together for three years. You know who I am..." I tried to explain.
He turned away: "Emcee, continue."
My wedding had become someone else's show.
I was like a clown, standing by.
I could hear them say:
"I do."
Sophie Miller cried uncontrollably, while Ethan Walker was tender and caring.
I was dragged away by bodyguards and thrown out into the streets.
The white wedding dress had turned into a clown's costume.
My parents appeared in front of me.
"Xiaodi, see, we told you city men can't be trusted. Come back with us, Jack Stone is waiting for you in the village."
They shouldn't be here; I thought I had escaped.
Behind me stood Ethan Walker's bodyguard: "Mr. Zhou asked me to tell you, Emily, go back to your little village, that's where you belong."
I saw the pity in his eyes, and I couldn’t help but laugh. The man who once loved me more than anything, now couldn’t understand me as well as a stranger.
"What did you tell him?"
Their eyes flickered: "Nothing, just told him you're engaged, let him be at peace."
I laughed through my tears. My parents... this pathetic life of mine.
I went back to the Zhou family home, where the guards, unaware of the wedding disaster, greeted me warmly.
I thought, Ethan was just being impulsive. He loved me so much, he would listen to me.
Though the wedding was unfinished, the marriage certificate was still there. If I explained myself, everything would be fine.
But he didn’t come back.
Perhaps he was enjoying life with Sophie Miller.
I waited and waited, until the fifth day, when the door finally opened.
"Ethan!"
I jumped up.
When I saw him and the person standing behind him, my smile froze.
"You brought her here? Ethan Walker, you brought another woman back to our home?"
I lost control of my emotions. The waiting and torment for days had made me lose my sanity.
I probably looked ugly now, hysterical, out of my mind.
And he? He just stood there, coldly watching my breakdown.

"What are you still doing here?"
"Where else should I go? Ethan Walker, you told me yourself, this is our home!"
Sophie Miller interrupted: "Emily, you’ve embarrassed Ethan enough, lied to him for so long, and you still have the nerve to say that? I can’t believe it."
Suddenly, I remembered something important: "Ethan, we need to talk."
"There’s nothing to talk about, Emily Stone. Just consider these years of my true feelings as food for the dogs. You can leave, I won’t make it difficult for you, but I don’t want to see you again." He didn’t even look up.
I grabbed his sleeve, he looked down but didn’t push me away: "Ethan, please, just listen to me for a few minutes, okay?"
"Fine..."
Sophie Miller interrupted again: "Ethan, grandma is still waiting for us at home!"
He hesitated, and I quickly added: "It won’t take long, Ethan, just a few words."
He let Sophie Miller go first and took me into the study.
"Those videos are fake, I don’t know where they came from. My parents were lying too, don’t believe them."
He sneered: "Is that all?"
He stared at me, his eyes red again: "If you weren’t worried about me discovering the engagement, why have you never introduced me to your parents or talked about your hometown?"
"They’re not my parents, Ethan, they’re demons. I barely escaped, I really don’t want to go back."
"So you climbed onto me, hoping to marry into a rich family, right?"
I was completely disappointed: "Ethan Walker, when I met you, I had no idea who you were!"
He laughed coldly: "Is that so? But Sophie Miller already told you. When you first met me, she told you, which is why your attitude changed so quickly!"
So, my self-deprecating rejection became a sin, and my unwillingness to mention my painful past turned into hypocrisy.
His eyes reddened as he accused me: "In these three years, did you ever love me? I’ve been so good to you, Emily Stone, do you even care?"
Ethan Walker, all the love and protection you promised... was it all lies? Do you even have a heart?
You’ve already decided that I’m just a woman trying to climb the social ladder, so you’ve negated everything.
Did you ever trust me, even a little?
I was exhausted: "Forget it, Ethan Walker, I’m the fool for believing in your vows."
As I left, I caught Sophie Miller’s provocative gaze.
Fine, Sophie Miller, you win.
I thought I could endure it, until the constant harassment started.
Someone followed me, someone caused trouble at my workplace, and people started gossiping about the wedding incident.
My parents came to my door again and again, crying and yelling, accusing me of being unfilial.
My life was turned upside down.
The world looked down on me, and I was completely drained. I messaged Sophie Miller: "Let’s meet."
"I know it was you." I said directly.
"I don’t know what you’re talking about." She lowered her head, picking at her nails.
"I’ve given up, Sophie Miller. We were once friends, why are you doing this to me?" Her delicate makeup only made me look even more disheveled.
"Emily Stone, if Ethan Walker doesn’t give up on you, I won’t let you off."
Her eyes suddenly dropped to something behind me, and tears fell from her eyes: "I don’t know what you mean, Emily Stone, I can’t help it if Ethan doesn’t want to see you. Why do you have to push me..."
I heard footsteps: "Emily Stone! Sophie agreed to marry me in your place, she’s been through so much for you. Why are you still causing her trouble?"
He pulled her into his arms, acting like her protector.
"Ethan Walker, she’s the one causing me trouble. I’ve been pushed to the brink. I can’t take it anymore."
I couldn’t believe how calm I was. Maybe I was just numb.
