Haunted Records: The Player Who Refuses to Be Scared

★★★★

Content length:

When ordinary gamer Eve Walker is dragged into the legendary death game Haunted Records, everyone expects another disposable body for the mansion’s kill count. Instead, they get a player who treats ghosts like roommates with bad boundaries. Eve doesn’t cry, doesn’t run, doesn’t play by the script. She: cleans crime scenes because “the mess is giving me a headache,” lectures vengeful spirits about self-care, and uses boss encounters as opportunities to interrogate what really happened in the “unsolved tragedy” behind the game.

Chapter 1
I could fall asleep in four seconds flat, even after getting thrown into a horror game.
A little girl covered in blood was standing at my bedside, and I was snoring like a chainsaw.
Around midnight the woman hanging in the painting opened her eyes and saw me grinding my teeth in my sleep.
Later that night I felt hot, rolled over, and wrapped my arms around something.
It was icy cold, and the texture was surprisingly nice to hold.
The final boss said, "How about you open your eyes and see who you're hugging. I’m not your body pillow."
[Game "Haunted Records" loaded.]
[Player "Eve Walker" has entered the game.]
[Player rank, C.]
The moment I landed in the game, the other players sitting around the long table blew up.
"You’ve got to be kidding me. We’re all A-rank players and the system throws in a C-rank noob?"
"Is she so desperate to grind levels she doesn’t care about dying?"
"I bet she doesn’t even make it through the first night."
Nine men and women sat around the table.
They were all seasoned A-rank players, veterans who had crawled out of piles of corpses in countless horror runs.
Now they were staring at me like I was some kind of glitch.
Guess none of them ever thought they would end up running an A-rank dungeon with a C-rank tagalong.
A tall girl finally had enough and stood up.
"Cut it out. If a C-rank got thrown into an A-rank scenario, she has to have some kind of special skill, right?"
"Yeah right. What could a C-rank possibly do?"
"Exactly. How many runs has she even cleared? She’d probably pee herself the moment she sees a ghost."
The girl looked straight at me and pushed, "Well? Say it. Do you or don’t you?"
A special skill.
I actually did have one.
I thought about it for a moment and answered very seriously, "I’m really good at sleeping."
The room went quiet.
"…You’re kidding, right?" someone finally said.
The livestream chat exploded.
[If you don’t have a skill, you really don’t have to make one up, streamer.]
[I’m dying over here. That has to be the most useless skill I’ve ever heard.]
[Just log out and go home. Please. Just go home.]
I sighed to myself.
They had no idea how useful good sleep could be.
Once everyone more or less recovered from the shock, a guy in a leather jacket walked over to me and gave me a slow, dismissive once-over.
"You’re late. We already divided up the rooms," he said.
"The one in the basement is yours."
The villa had three floors.
The A-rank players had already claimed the prime spots on the first and second floors.
The room they tossed me was in the basement, and even from three meters away it was giving off a chill.
Bloody handprints were smeared across the door.
Cold moonlight slipped in through the window and fell right on the big bed in the center of the room.
[Yeah, I’m scared and I’m just watching through a screen.]
[Anyone who’s played this scenario knows the haunt starts in the basement. They’re obviously bullying her.]
[Look, she’s scared. She’s totally going to run back and cling to one of the A-rank pros.]
I turned back to the guy in the jacket and smiled.
"Good night."
Chat, collectively: [???]
He clearly hadn’t expected me to take it that calmly and just stood there, stunned.
I closed the door right in front of him.
Then I kicked off my shoes, changed into my pajamas in one smooth motion, and flopped onto the bed.
A big bed.
A room all to myself.
And the pillow was soft as a cloud.
Anyone who has shared a dorm room with three other girls for four years would understand how precious that was.
I rolled around under the blanket in pure bliss.
[Youth really is something. She just lies down and knocks out.]
[Wait, is she seriously going to sleep? Where did the system even find a player like this?]
[If she would just look up, she’d pass out from fear.]
Because I fell asleep so fast, I completely missed the painting hanging above the headboard, the one with a dead woman dangling from a rope.
This horror scenario was called Haunted Records.
It was based on a massacre that had taken place years ago in a secluded villa.
A family of five had died there under strange circumstances, and ever since then the place turned haunted every night at midnight.
