Content length: 13 Chapters

On the night she got blackout drunk, fashion designer Zoey Hart was slung over someone’s shoulder and carried out of a bar in downtown New York. When she woke up, she found herself in a stranger’s bed— Broad shoulders, narrow waist, eight-pack abs, cold and taciturn, an air of danger all over him that practically screamed: do not mess with me. The most ridiculous part? She’d lost her memory. On the phone, her fiancé Lucas Kane sounded perfunctory: “Zoey, if you’re done making a scene, come back on your own. I’m busy.” The stranger next to her, however, snatched the phone out of her hand, bent down and brushed a kiss against her lips: “She’s not dead. She just seems pretty comfortable calling me ‘husband.’” Later, Zoey finally realized— the man she’d mistaken for her “husband” was someone both New York’s high society and underworld gave a wide berth: Adrian Reed, head of the Reed family, the most dangerous mafia boss in the city. Her fiancé skipped their engagement party, and on the night of their wedding, he was tangled up with a little starlet instead?

Chapter 1
After the mafia boss kidnapped me, I lost my memory.
I mistook the mafia boss for my husband, grabbed him, kissed him, and put my hands all over him.
Unfortunately for me, the man in charge might have had a perfect face and a killer body, but he was cold, self-restrained, and would not let me touch him.
It went on like that until my fiancé, who had been pretending I was dead, finally called.
“Zoey Hart, are you done playing around out there? When you are, come back yourself.”
The kidnapper boss yanked my phone out of my hand and kissed me until I could barely breathe.
His voice was flat.
“She is not dead. She just seems pretty comfortable calling me ‘husband.’”
My fiancé panicked after that and dragged me into the bridal suite in the middle of the night, trying to cash in on the wedding night ahead of schedule.
That same night, the man who ruled both sides of the law, the Reed family’s crown prince Adrian Reed, the one who could cover the whole New York circle with one hand, smashed his way into the bridal suite.
He threw his coat over my shoulders and his expression was terrifying.
“Baby, how did he even dare to take you. How about I kill him for you.”
Back then, I never imagined Lucas Kane really would not come to save me.
He had sounded lazy on the phone, his voice mixed with deafening rock music from the bar.
The sound of it stabbed straight into my chest.
“Lucas, who is that?”
A sweet, soft female voice floated out through the speaker, crystal clear.
She was the new little starlet Lucas was keeping.
“No one.”
He tossed the phone onto the table like it was nothing.
I could not even bother hiding how bad I felt. My voice shook and went hoarse.
“Lucas Kane, I really have been kidnapped. I am not lying to you.”
He let out a light, mocking laugh.
“Zoey Hart, your little tricks are way too cheap.
I already agreed to marry you. Don’t get greedy.
You get my body. Forget about getting my heart.”
The kidnappers actually laughed at that.
I looked down at the knife pressed against my neck and my voice trembled.
“Say something, please. If you talk, he will believe you.”
They stopped laughing. One of them cleared his throat and spoke into the phone in a rough, low voice.
“One million. The northern suburbs of the city. Cash for the girl, clean trade.”
Lucas laughed.
“How much did Zoey Hart pay you to put on this little show for her.
I will double it. Keep her entertained. Act however you want. Just stop bothering me.”
“Lucas Kane, you are really not coming to get me?”
I still held on to a tiny bit of hope.
A syrupy voice cut in and broke the moment.
“Lucas, you are not paying attention.”
The sounds on the other end turned shameless, soft gasps spilling straight into my ear through the phone.
Between breaths, Lucas still found the space to say,
“When you are done making a scene, come back. I am busy.”
The call cut off and the empty warehouse was left echoing with his indifference.
Two kidnappers smoked like I was not even there and started talking it over.
“What now. Knock her out and dump her on the boss’s bed?”
“Look at that waist, those legs, and that mouth that just will not quit. Boss likes this type.”
“Just give her something, wrap her up, and carry her over.”
I had no idea who this “boss” of theirs actually was.
What if he turned out to be some big, rough old man with full-sleeve tattoos and a cigarette stuck to his mouth.
Was I really going to die here.
“Hey, she is running.”
“Move.”
In the end, two legs were never going to outrun four.
One swing of a baton and the kidnapper knocked me out cold.

Chapter 2
When I woke up again, I was in a bed.
I could not remember a thing.
The blanket was pulled all the way over my head and the bedroom was almost completely dark.
I had no idea how long I lay there before I finally heard voices outside.
The sound was low and muffled. I could not make out the words, but my brain had already filled in the image of a man with way too much presence.
The door opened and footsteps came closer.
For no good reason, I got nervous.
The steps stopped right beside the bed and paused.
Then the blanket over my head was yanked back and I found myself staring straight into a pair of dark eyes.
I had never seen him before.
But he was stupidly good-looking.
That was my first clear thought.
Short, clean-cut hair. Sharp brows. A straight nose. Thin lips with a natural flush that looked a little too inviting. Tanned skin with a small mole at his Adam’s apple.
His chest was broad, his abs were obviously there, and his pants really did not hide much.
Only his eyes were ice cold.
He looked like the type who pretended to be above everything, but you could tell he absolutely was not.
He stared for a second, obviously thrown off, then pulled the blanket back over me.
He clicked his tongue, clearly annoyed.
There was a soft snap as he flipped a lighter. A moment later he lit a cigarette.
Smoke curled in the dim room while he leaned against the headboard and made a call.
I was still lying right next to him.
The second the call connected, he went in with a question.
He sounded beyond impatient.
“Why is there a woman in my bed looking at me like she wants to eat me alive?”
Silence came from the other side.
Whoever it was started talking again, but it was all a blur.
I only caught a few words here and there. Kidnapped. Not very obedient. Fiancée. Took a fall.
I did remember my dad, the current head of Hart Group.
Greedy, always thinking in terms of deals and marriages.
So my dad had probably decided I should marry this man, I refused, and they had me dragged here.
Then I fell, hit my head, and somehow lost my memory.
Which meant this man was my fiancé.
With a face like that, why would I have refused?
“I see. Great. You all are very good at making decisions for me.”
There was a hint of a smile in his voice, but it was cold.
Whoever was on the other end went quiet, scared to breathe too loud.
I struggled under the blanket, trying to crawl out.
He heard the rustling and, still on the phone, lifted a corner of it.
His long fingers skimmed over my cheek and scratched lightly under my chin.
It was the way someone absentmindedly pets a cat while they are busy with something else.
It tickled.
I opened my mouth and bit his finger.
He hissed.
“Boss, what happened?”
His expression went back to normal.
“Nothing. The cat you people dropped off decided to bite.”
He really thought I was a cat.
I was so annoyed I bit him again.
He hung up the phone without another word and looked down at me.
His dark eyes were completely calm.
We just stared at each other, and kept staring, until my face heated up and I had to look away.
He let out a short, mocking laugh.
“So that is all the courage you have.”
I bit down on my lip, embarrassed enough to want to dig a hole and hide in it.
“I am giving you one chance to walk out of here. Take it and leave.”
He probably also figured I did not want to marry him.
The thing was, I was starting to change my mind.
“Um…”
My voice was barely louder than a mosquito.
“It is not impossible. I adapt pretty fast.”
You are this mean and still this handsome.
“Honey, we could just make it work.”
The words came out slow and shy and my face burned.
In my head, fireworks were going off.
“What did you just say?”
He grabbed my face where it was still half hidden under the blanket and turned it toward him.
His index finger hooked under my chin. He was obviously interested now.
His brows lifted a little. The corner of his mouth curved up.
His eyes skimmed over my face, amused and teasing.
“What did you say?”
That low voice made my heart itch.
I blushed even harder and whispered, “Honey…”
He gave a short hum in his nose.
“My name is Adrian Reed.”
“Oh.”
“You are not scared?” Adrian sounded honestly surprised.
I was already in his hands. What was there to be scared of.
I shook my head. “I am not.”
“You are really not leaving?”
“I am staying.”
Adrian sounded a little disgusted. “You are too young.”
“Then you can keep me around for a while first,” I cut in.
His patience was almost gone. “I do not keep anyone around for nothing.”
I was already supposed to be his fiancée and he was calling me useless.
Unless…
“Adrian, can you untie me first?”
The ropes were digging into my skin and it hurt.
Adrian started undoing the knots like he was unwrapping a present.
His fingers, all long joints and clean lines, curled and tugged the ropes loose. It felt rough against my skin.
When I finally got free, I hurried to crawl out from under the blanket.
I just had not expected the people who tied me up to also change my clothes.
They had put me in that kind of outfit.
Black lace, just barely covering what it needed to.
Adrian turned his head away. He threw the blanket over me and headed for the door.
“Get dressed and come out.”
Seriously. Not even a little bit tempted.
I gritted my teeth, grabbed Adrian’s wrist, and gave it a hard yank. He stumbled and fell right on top of me.
I wrapped my arms around his neck and lifted my chin to kiss him.
Adrian clearly had not seen that coming. He froze for a few seconds before he tried to push me away.
By then I was already clinging to him with both arms and both legs.
I had never really learned how to kiss, so all I could do was kiss him in a messy, clumsy way.
One of his arms circled my waist to keep me from slipping off.
His warm, tanned skin against my bare waist was impossible to ignore.
His other hand closed around the back of my neck and pulled me back a little so he could break the kiss.
We looked at each other. I let my gaze dart away and pretended to be shy.
Adrian’s eyes were completely clear. He brushed his thumb over the corner of my mouth where I had bumped it against his teeth.
“If you do not know how to kiss, stop trying to force it.”
“I…”
He set me back down on the bed. I caught his hand again.
“Then can you let me practice a little more?”
Adrian went quiet.
