My Hot Neighbor, My Only Star
Chapter 1“No matter how many people I meet in this life, I’ll still choose you, every single time.”“Are you sure you don’t need a break? Take as long as you want, I can sign off on it.”The white-haired, blue-eyed professor glanced over the new observation proposal Amelia Hart had just turned in, then checked with her again. The monitor in front of her was packed with dense lines of data.
In a rare pause, Amelia looked up from the screen and smiled.
“Professor, I’m really not tired. You don’t have to worry about me.”Across the lab, Chloe Summers met the professor’s eyes.
They both lifted a hand at the same time, giving Amelia a quiet thumbs-up.Amelia Hart was something of a legend in the Physics and Astronomy department at the University of Waterloo in Canada.
There was a running joke among the students that classes might be canceled and the world might fall apart, but nothing would ever stop Amelia from heading to the lab.Aside from eating and sleeping, Amelia was always studying or working. She was like a machine that never wore out.
Her grades on campus were outstanding, she juggled part-time jobs off campus, and she still signed up for every observing trip.
No matter how harsh the conditions were at a site, she never backed down.“Amelia, why do you work this hard? What are you really after?”
Chloe finally couldn’t hold back her curiosity.
On their way back to the dorm, she voiced the question she had been sitting on for a long time.“For my own dream,” Amelia said, “and for one particular star.”“A star?”“Yeah.” She nodded. “Chasing one specific star.A star called Adrian West.”
Chapter 2Discovering a new planet was already close to impossible.
In Amelia Hart’s mind, trying to catch up to Adrian West was just as hard.Adrian had never been an easy person to get close to.
She had known that from the very first time she met him, when she was twelve. That year, Amelia’s parents moved the family from China to a small town near Winnipeg, Canada.
The news came out of nowhere.
Maybe her parents had been planning it for a while, but they did not say a word until everything was set.Amelia did not want to go.She had just promised her best friend at school that they would go to the same middle school and stick together.
It was the first time in her life she had made a serious pinky promise, and she had no intention of breaking it over one winter break. But a lot of decisions were never really up to her.
She cried and threw a fit for half a day, her eyes swelling up like walnuts.
In the end her parents waited until she finally cried herself to sleep, then carried her to the airport. They walked through unfamiliar streets and checkpoints.
She sat in a cramped airplane seat, crossed an ocean, and by the time her mind cleared, she was already standing on the other side of the world.Everything in front of her was blinding white.
Amelia had seen plenty of snowstorms since then, but she still felt that day was the worst one.
Snow sliced through the air like knives.
Even standing under the eaves, she could not escape the wind, and she shivered so hard her teeth knocked together. She called out to her parents a few times, but they had no time for her at all.
Before the suitcases were even out of the car, they were already arguing with the Chinese driver who had picked them up, demanding to know why the fare they had agreed on suddenly had an extra sixty Canadian dollars tacked on.The driver said it was a snow surcharge.
Her mother shot back that no matter how bad the weather was, that kind of markup made no sense.Neither side would back down.
The argument went in circles with no sign of ending.Amelia squatted down on the icy ground, feeling completely helpless.
Her eyes burned, and tears were just about to spill over. Then, all of a sudden, something warm was pushed into her hands.
She looked down and saw a baked potato wrapped in foil.
A young Asian woman was smiling at her.“Are you from China?” the woman asked in Mandarin.Amelia froze for a second.
The words were so familiar it felt unreal.
She nodded quickly.“It’s nice to meet you. I live next door, my name is Susan West.”
Susan pointed at the house beside them.
Her voice had a soft southern lilt.
“Your parents might need a while to sort this out. Do you want to come over and get out of the snow for a bit?”Back then, Amelia did not have much sense of caution.
One warm potato was enough to win her over.
Luckily for her, Susan was not a bad person.
She gently took Amelia’s hand and led her into the house next door. The heat was on inside.
Amelia took a few deep breaths of warm air and felt like she had come back to life. Her curious gaze wandered around the living room and bumped into the eyes of a boy sitting on the couch. That was Adrian West at fourteen.
His features were already sharp and handsome, and that cool, distant air had already settled around him.
His eyes lingered on her face for less than a second before he looked away, completely uninterested. If Susan had not called him over, he probably would not have spoken to her at all.Even so, Amelia still officially met him that day.
He walked over, bent down a little so they were at eye level, and gave a simple introduction.“Hi. I’m Adrian West.”Under the warm yellow light, most people’s eyes would soften.
If you looked closely at Adrian’s though, you would see there was not much warmth in them at all.Amelia had always known that in his eyes, there was nothing particularly special about her.
