It looked fixable. So I rolled up my sleeves and fixed it.The others just stared at me.The viewers watching this horror run started spamming the chat. While my teammates were still in shock, I slid into the driver’s seat and tried to start the car.My role in this run was the driver, so getting them to the destination was literally my job. There was a loud bang. The car still refused to start and tipped to one side instead. We jumped out to check. This time the tire had completely blown. The people from the car cursed under their breath as they climbed out.I stayed put, sprawled across the seat. I refused to believe we couldn’t just sleep in the car for one night. It was only a busted tire. Then the system chime sounded in my ear.“Rumor has it there are predators in these woods at night, so you and the passengers can only find lodging in the nearby village.”As the flat electronic voice faded, I caught a whiff of something burning.A bad feeling crawled up my spine, and I jumped out of the car.The second my feet hit the ground, the car exploded behind me, taking our last fallback option with it.The tattooed guy at the front shot me a disgusted look. “Hey, Ethan, keep up.”On the way over I had already explained I was not Ethan Walker’s side piece, but a few of the guys were convinced Ethan and I were sleeping together. The tattooed one called himself Drake and claimed Ethan was his brother. The car died on us at dusk. The forest was deep and dense. Before long, the sky was completely dark. After we had been walking for a while, a slim guy with glasses said, “Have you noticed we kind of keep ending up in the same spot?”He pointed at a clump of wild grass on the ground. “I’ve got a good memory. This patch was right next to the car when it blew.”When the car exploded, the grass nearby had been scorched, but this little clump was untouched.Looking closely, it really did feel familiar, although I couldn’t be sure. My memory was nowhere near that good.Towering old trees rose around us, their trunks covered in mushroom-like growths. The canopy blocked out the moon. Ever since it got dark, I’d had the creepy feeling that a lot of eyes were on us.It felt like all those mushrooms were watching.
Chapter 2Drake said, "Why don’t we just burn all the grass around here?"The others trusted Drake more than they trusted me and nodded right away.I was not a fan. Forest protection and all that.I pointed at the mushrooms beside us and said, "Don’t you feel like something is watching us? If we start a fire now, we might piss it off."Drake looked at me. "Got a better idea then?"I answered seriously, "We could try luring it out and talk to it, see what it wants."Drake let out a short laugh. The guys behind him laughed too, all of them wearing that “comforting the idiot” expression.Only the guy with glasses gave me a long, thoughtful look. The viewers watching the horror run were confused as well.Drake did not bother to look at me again. He pulled out an item. The item exploded in midair. The ancient trees and weeds around us caught fire.If I had been watching a movie, I would have enjoyed it.That blast was pure eye candy, ten out of ten on the explosion scale. But if I put myself in its place, I doubted it would enjoy having its home set on fire.Imagine someone breaking into your house, showing up empty-handed, then lighting the place up. Would you be happy about that?Is that polite?I quietly put a bit more distance between Drake and me.The mushrooms nearby swelled like they had suddenly come to life and shot toward Drake.Drake and the guys next to him reacted fast. They pulled out machetes and started hacking at the mushrooms.Mixed in with the mushrooms were strands of transparent mycelium. They were so thin, and the night was so dark, that none of the others noticed them.My guess was that once those filaments wrapped around someone, they would not die right away. They would just end up as the walking dead. The brand in my palm grew hot. I lifted my hand and blocked the mycelium.Every strand was sucked into the mark.I sighed. It felt like I had just taken on a favor again. No, not from a person, from a god.Azrael had branded me in the last dungeon. I thought rewinding the timeline would erase it. Turns out it stuck. Most of the time you could not see it, but against things like this, it was surprisingly handy. The guys finished chopping the mushrooms and then noticed me standing there, right arm raised, waving it side to side. They all looked a little weirded out.Drake snorted. "Hey, girl, if you want to surrender, you need both hands up."The other men sneered at my “hand dance” as well.Glasses Guy had not joined in the mushroom chopping. He kept staring at a tall dragon tree in the distance.Drake followed his gaze and asked respectfully, "Noah, you see something?"Noah pushed his glasses up. "All the mushrooms came from that direction. Whatever is behind this should be over there."He was right. The mycelium had been shooting out of the trunk of that dragon tree.Just looking at the mushrooms, I could not tell where they came from. Noah really did have a good head on his shoulders.I could feel something inside the tree.Drake led us toward it.Unfortunately, the trees and grass that had just been scorched were now completely restored, and we were still walking in circles.
